The Power of Music

Music therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It has been used in the United States for almost sixty years and is appropriate for individuals of all ages and abilities. This form of therapy is increasingly being identified by health care professionals as an effective catalyst for client motivation, stimulation and communication. It is being used in hospitals, school programs and private practices to name just a few. Research by Nayak et al showed that music therapy is associated with a decrease in depression, improved mood, and reduced anxiety. Music therapy has also been used to treat individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias. It has been found that music, especially familiar songs, unlocks memories as well as improving communication and overcoming withdrawal. Because music therapy is noninvasive and free of side affects, it is also often used in cancer treatment to help reduce pain, anxiety, and nausea caused by chemotherapy. Music has a powerful effect on the brain triggering whole brain processes and functioning.
